Ingersoll, Charles J., 1782-1862
Charles Jared Ingersoll was born on October 3, 1782 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Jared Ingersoll and Elizabeth Petit. His father served in the Continental Congress. Charles Ingersoll dropped out of both the College of New Jersey and Princeton University, but then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1802. He was elected to the Thirteenth Congress as a Democratic-Republican in 1812 and was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He was not renominated for Congress, as he was appointed U.S. District Attorney and served in that office from 1815 to 1829, when he was removed from office by President Andrew Jackson. In 1830 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1837. He made an unsuccessful bid for U.S. Congress again in 1838, but was elected to the Twenty-seventh Congress in 1840 and served in the next three succeeding Congresses. Charles Ingersoll was married to Mary Wilcocks and they had eight surviving children. He died on May 14, 1862 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
