Dear Sir
Your letter of Jany 31 is received. My remark to Mrs Quinby was, that if you were desirous of office here, it would be better for you to remain here, as all vacancies are filled as soon as they are known. I cannot undertake to say what your chances are. Competitors for every place, are very numerous, and their claims or supposed claims, are pressed with great earnestness, by their friends. I can only say that I shall be glad to aid you here or elsewhere. If a suitable opportunity should offer, I will apprise you of it; and in the near time, you will yourself, look out, and when you discover in what form I can help you, I hope you will let me know it.
[illegible]
A.P. Upshur
A.B. Quinby Esq.
