Gardenier, Barent, 1776-1822
Barent Gardenier was a lawyer and U.S. Congressman from 1807-1811. In 1808, he fought a duel with congressman George W. Campbell. Gardenier opposed the Embargo Acts of 1807-1809, and his fiery speech on the subject enraged Campbell, who then challenged him to a duel. The duel was the first to take place at what became known as the Bladensburg Dueling Grounds. Gardenier is buried at Kinston's First Reformed Church in New York.
