Bayly, Thomas, 1775-1829

Thomas Bayly was born on September 13, 1775, in Quantico, Somerset (now Wicomico) County, Maryland. His parents were Esme Bayly and Sinah Polk and he had eight siblings. He graduated from Princeton College in 1797. He was admitted to the Bar and practiced law in Worcester and Somerset Counties. Later, he served as a member of the State House of Delegates from 1804 to 1814. Afterward, he was elected to the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Congresses, serving as Representative for Maryland’s 8th District from March 4, 1817 to March 3, 1823. Refusing to run for reelection, he instead went back to private practice until his death on September 18, 1829, at the age of 54. He is buried at his family’s Wellington Estate in Quantico. Thomas Bayly was also a known enslaver.
