Hotels - The Washington City Hotel
The Washington City Hotel was an inn open in Washington D.C. as early as 1799, owned by Pontius Delare Stelle as of 1804. He was born in Trenton, N.J. in 1763, a descendant of French Huguenots. The hotel was in various locations on Capitol Hill throughout the years. In 1804, he was in Capital Square, and in 1805, he moved into an inn formerly owned by Tunnicliff. He next took premises in a location with 50 guest rooms purchased from Mr. Carroll, and this building was later demolished and Library of Congress was constructed in its place. Pontius D. Stelle was buried at the Congressional Cemetery in 1826, after spending his last years working at the U.S. Treasury Department.
