Sayre, Samuel Williams, 1780-1824
Capt. Samuel William (also: Wilson in some records) Sayre was born sometime between 1779 and 1780, to Stephen Sayer and Elizabeth Noel. He was likely born in London and moved to America with his father and stepmother, Elizabeth Dorone, when they returned to the country in the 1790s. He married Jane Grymes on September 1, 1804, and they had one daughter, Mary Grymes Sayre. Jane died in childbirth, therefore sometime in 1807, he married Virginia Bassett and together they had six children, four of whom lived to adulthood. He was involved in several lawsuits and Marshall’s sales involving the estate of his first father-in-law, Philip L. Grymes. He served in the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the US Army. He died in December of 1824.
