Bowie, Washington, 1776-1826

Washington Bowie, one of the wealthiest men in Maryland during his life, was a tobacco merchant and real estate speculator. He was born on August 12, 1776, and was the son of Col. Allen Bowie and Ruth Cramphin Bowie. He married Margaret Crabb Johns Chew on September 17, 1799, in Georgetown. Around 1810, he built a spectacular home now known as the Bowie-Sevier House. He's buried at the family cemetery in Olney, Maryland.
