Handy, William Winder, 1785-1864

Dr. William Winder Handy was born on January 12, 1785, in Salisbury, Somerset County, Maryland, to Henry Dashiel Handy and Jane Winder. He married Elizabeth Tyson on August 27, 1811 and together they had eight children, five of which lived to adulthood. He served on the Board of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland in various positions, as well as being on the Board of Examiners for the Western Shore of Maryland. Served as a delegate to the Tariff Convention at Philadelphia in 1831 along with Arnold E. Jones, representing Somerset “one of the lower Counties on the Eastern Shore.” He was a member of the Whig Party and attended meetings in Somerset, where he was influential in the local Whig Meetings. Dr. Handy died on January 27, 1864 and is buried at the Friends Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
