Merchants - Bethmann Fils & Co.
The Bethmann family of Frankfurt produced many successful bankers and merchants. In 1768, Johann Jakob Bethmann was appointed Imperial Consul for Bordeaux, where he established another branch of the family's mercantile business, Bethmann Fils & Co. After his death in 1792, his business continued although some of the Bethmann descendants returned to Frankfurt. His great-grandson, Alexandre de Bethmann served as mayor of Bordeaux from 1867-1870.
