Lanham, George Horatio, 1774-1844
George Horatio Lanham was born August 30, 1774, in Piscataway, Maryland to Edward Lanham and Susannah Page. He married Sempronia Hamilton in 1793, in Durham Parish, Charles, Maryland and together they had nine children. George Lanham was elected sheriff of Piscataway in 1818. By 1834, he had “many judgements” against him and he gave his property and several of his enslaved to his son, Edward L. Lanham and his son in law, William Bryan and then moved west. He and Sempronia, along with several of their children, settled in St. Louis, Missouri in 1835, where he lived the rest of his life, while some of his daughters and several grandchildren moved to California during the Gold Rush. George died on January 22, 1844 and is buried in the family plot near what is now the Barnes Jewish West County Hospital.
