Madame de Staël was a respected intellectual, philosopher and woman of letters, with influence in political circles in France. She sometimes experienced exile and was persecuted during Napoleon's reign. On January 14, 1786, she married Baron Erik Magnus Staël von Holstein, although she engaged in many extramarital dalliances.
