A note from J. Eyre Esquire; written to me at Colo. Custis Kendall’s where my sister (afterward Mrs. Eyre) was confined by a fracture of her leg. I believe, this might be said to be the beginning of Mr. Eyre’s attachment to her. We experienced the greatest kindness and attention from that family as well as from others, on that occasion.

Eyre Hall June 16th 1798

The Family at Eyre Hall, much interested for Miss Ann Upshur’s situation; have sent up to enquire how she is. They at the same time beg leave to offer their services, in any way in which they can be acceptable. If they have any article which can alleviate her sufferings it will give them great pleasure to furnish it, there being nothing within their power which they wou’d not do to make her confinement tolerable.

If Books of entertainment will be acceptable, they shall be sent.
