Glasgow the 10th July 1813
My dear Mrs. Teackle
Having just learned that my friend Mr. Jeffery whom Teackle met with in Scotland, the leading person in the Edinburgh Review, has set off to Liverpool to embark on a cartel for America and that if I write in half an hour there is a chance of this letter overtaking him. I embrace the opportunity altho’ I can hardly do more than acknowledge receiving your delightful letter and to tell you that it would not have remained unacknowledged until this time, but from being overpressed with that listlessness which attends a long period of indifferent health until, soon after receiving yours, I left home, and business, and made nearly a three months excursion in England spending the greatest part of my time at Cheltenham, a watery place celebrated for bilious complaints, and which has brought me into a state of as good health as ever, and you will very soon receive my thanks in a much fuller
manner of the magnitude of the accountability does not entirely prevent me. There is so much to reply to, and a great part is so perfectly new to me.
This poetic view was quite unexpected and your political discussions. I have been frequently requested to give to the public but the most interesting to me is your family detail and I have desired Jeffrey if he should only be a day in Philadelphia to call at Mrs. Bancker’s and see your Eliza that I may question him upon his return what resemblance she has to you. Jeffrey is gone to America to get married to a Miss Wilkes, with whom he got in love when she was here, a granddaughter or niece of our famous Wilkes and the duties of his profession cannot allow his making a long stay there but I will be most disappointed if he is not at Philadelphia and if your daughter is not there at the same time. I have assured his visiting there with her address to Littleton and perhaps L may chance to
be in Philadelphia or New York while Mr. Jeffrey is there. I have not even heard it hinted, but I would not be surprised if he had some political mission combined with his Matrimonial one, this however, is not conjecture. Would to God we had peace, but a breach once made and irritating and irreconcilable consequences are sure to ensue. Tell Littleton that I have got some money for him and will write by next opportunity.
I have only time again to express my sincere regard for yourself, for Littleton, [torn page] for Eliza. I am quite astonished to think that she is now [torn page] if not quite, 12 years old. Almost that age at which I knew you!! Now that I have got a little independence, I wish myself 10 years younger and accompanying my friends. By the way, you must know that he although seen as a critic, is one of the wildest and most affectionate dispositions. I wish you could see him, he is a very great favorite with all our family.
